What makes the Ionian Islands so good for family sailing holidays?

Why you should choose the Ionian Islands for your sailing holiday
The Ionian Islands, consisting of Lefkas / Lefkada, Kefalonia, Corfu, Paxos, Anti Paxos, Ithica, Kalamos, Kastos and Meganissi are really the jewel in the sailing crown – and here is why:
Protected waters
The lie of the islands, particularly in the South Ionian, make for a very protected sailing region. There is very little in the way of sea swell, so the sailing is comfortable and swimming off the boats is easy and safe. It is very safe for children.
No tides / currents
Of course being in the Mediterranean, there are are very small tides and currents to worry about, so you do not have to take these into consideration when planning your days sailing. You can leave when you want and arrive when you want! A very nice change from tidal waters and makes for a very relaxing holiday.
Kind winds
The Ionian does not suffer from the very strong Meltemi winds, which impact the more eastern areas of Greece and Turkey. Mornings are normally fairly quiet, then the sea breeze picks up in the afternoons, for a nice F3/F4 sailing breeze, which is very comfortable and easily manageable. Winds normally die away in the early evening, making for a peaceful nights sleep.
Numerous beautiful villages and bays
We have so many villages and bays in the Ionian to visit. Each with their own charms. There really is something for everyone without the trappings of the more well known areas of Greece. It is such a beautiful area, with green pine forests and olive groves in abundance. If you fancy just dropping anchor in a deserted bay for the night, then you can you do this. There are no restrictions, and so many options open to you.
Easy to get to
Only 3 hours from the UK, with departure points from Manchester and London, with regular direct flights. Our base is only 35 minutes from Preveza airport. It really is a very simple place to get to!
Delicious food options
The food is simple, delicious and fantastic value in the Ionian. Grilled meats, fresh fish, Italian influence, classic Greek dishes and the most amazing salads. Fresh bread everywhere from the numerous bakeries, even in the smallest of villages. It is also amazing value. You must also try the excellent local Greek wines!
Low mooring fees
In the Ionian, we have very low mooring fees, which is a significant difference to Croatia, Italy, Spain, France and even more eastern areas of Greece. Most places don’t charge anything at all! It is very refreshing!
Compact cruising area
With such a compact cruising area, you really can take each day as it comes with little forward planning required. Days at sea can be as long or as short as you wish. It makes for a very relaxing holiday and perfect if you have non sailors or children on board.
