| How does the current economic situation in Greece impact your holiday? |
|
We are asked quite a lot by prospective and regular clients alike, how the current economic and political situation in Greece is impacting our business and how it may impact holidays. There is no hiding the fact that the current economic situation in Greece is indeed not great for the tourism business in Greece (or Spain or Italy for that matter). However, the aim of this article is to try and re-assure our clients that as a business, we Nisos Yacht Charter are on a sound footing, and as long as the islands stay put then it will be business as usual in the summer of 2012. Nisos Yacht Charter is a privately owned British Limited company. The company has no debts, few fixed financial obligations and significant financial resources behind it. Austerity measures introduced in Greece, include new taxes on yachting companies which are factored into the financial business plan going forwards and increased employment taxes. These increases in operating costs, whilst not welcome, are manageable, but it does mean that in order to continue the extremely high level of yacht maintenance, preparation and back up, the pricing of yacht charters does need to be considered carefully and margins maintained. It is of course important to book flights with an ATOL bonded flight agent (which we can advise on). The risk of strikes in Greece by the civil servants is a continuing threat, however it should be noted that during 2011, we were not impacted at all by any strikes that took place. Our flights into Preveza are on Sundays which also helps, as it seems strikes do not happen over weekends... Tourism is vitally important to the Greek recovery, and it would appear that any disruption which might threaten this industry is being managed effectively. The Ionian is a "million" miles away from the demonstrations in Athens - and all of us operating in the Ionian, from the yacht companies, to hoteliers to taverna owners are still 100% focused on providing the very best service and holidays to its tourist clients. It is a short summer season for the business owners, and life must go on! We have had reports from recently returned clients that prices in the tavernas are very reasonable and coupled with the improving £/euro rate, eating out is good value. What if Greece were to leave the Euro? Who knows what will happen! There is lots of speculation about when, what, if in the media, but I don't think anyone really knows what would happen if Greece left the Euro. The short of it is that cash will always work. Even if Greece leaves the Euro whilst you are on holiday, then as long as you have some Euros with you, you will be fine. So if you are concerned, do not rely solely on credit/debit cards, always have a supply of Euros in low denomination notes. Other than that, we really cannot see too many adverse reasons for not choosing Greece for your summer holiday this year. The small family owned Greek businesses needs your support at this time more than ever - they will appreciate it with excellent service, good food and a friendly welcome! As a management team we have worked in Greece for many years and if you have any concerns or questions, please do not be embarrased or afraid to chat it through with us.
