The Ionian Sea is bounded by southern Italy, which includes Calabria, Sicily and the Salento peninsula to the west, Albania to the north and the west coast of Greece. All major islands in the Ionian Sea belong to Greece and are referred to as the Ionian Islands. The main islands are Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, Paxos, Lefkada and Cythera, but there are many smaller islands offering secluded bays and clear blue water.

Ionian Sea

The idyllic Ionian Sea offers gentle sailing for both newcomers and experienced sailors. Formed as North and South, each has its own airport, lush green vegetation and a mild climate. Due to less severe winds than in other regions, the Ionian Islands form the perfect ground for sailing and yachting charters.

Ionian sailing holidays are a very popular way to spend your holidays, and whether you're an experienced sailor or a total novice makes no difference at all. Yachts are available to hire either as a bareboat, assisted bareboat, flotillas or skippered charters, and due to the calm flat waters, they are suitable for all ages and experience. With perfect sailing conditions, warm balmy days, beautiful islands and warm blue seas, what is there not to like? With bare boating, you sail the boat yourself and have no crew whatsoever on board. When part of a flotilla, you are still captain of the boat, but have experienced crew on hand. Assisted bareboat is a mix of the two. Skippered charters provide a skipper/instructor to sail the yacht, although you will be able to assist and have a go yourself under his watchful eye. Other crew, like cooks and hostesses are also available.

The boats available come in a range of sizes from 32ft to 51ft. They are all kitted out with the highest standard of equipment and every comfort you will need. CD players, IPOD and MP3 player connections are fitted as standard. They are available from 2 cabins to 5 cabins allowing for a small group or a large family, with space on deck for sunbathing. They are also fitted with a Bimini for that much needed midday shade. There is a fully equipped galley and all bed linen is provided. On-board, you will find a bathing platform with a deck shower, an inflatable dinghy with outboard motor, and snorkelling gear.

One of the benefits of sailing in the Ionian is the short distances between the islands, enabling you to visit a vast number of places in your week or two. Flights to Preveza airport will require a 35 minute journey by taxi to the harbour. Flights are available Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from Gatwick, Heathrow, Birmingham and Manchester, from 30th April until 29th October.

The rest is up to you - just create your itinerary and off you go. Explore the stunning Greek islands, indulge yourself with mouth-watering food and drink and immerse yourself in the ancient history that is found on every island. You will enjoy every minute, because you know you can do it all again next year.
