The Perfect Sailing Holiday in the Ionian Sea, Greece with Nisos Yacht Charter

We have just returned from a fantastic sailing adventure holiday in the Ionian Islands, Greece.  This journal outlines in varying levels of detail the holiday experience!

We flew from Birmingham Airport in the UK on the Sunday morning with Monarch, arriving into Preveza early afternoon.  Our three children, aged 9, 8 and 5 were so very excited!

At Preveza Airport, the glorious sunshine and accompanying heat that hit us as we disembarked the aircraft was very welcome following the typical damp start to the UK summer holidays!  Collecting luggage and clearing passport control at Preveza was painless and quick.  Once outside the one exit we were met by Lou, the Nisos Yacht Charter airport and transfers representative, and were soon underway on a luxury mini coach to the island of Lefkas.  The journey time was about 40 minutes, made slightly longer than normal due to the bridge across the canal to Lefkas being "away for refirbishment".  Instead we had to drive through a ferry which was strategically and ingeniously moored further up the canal.  Got to love the way the Greek nation make things work....

We arrived at the Nisos Yacht Charter yacht base in Perigiali and were warmly welcomed by Kate Campbell.  We had our own table in the shady garden at the Vaya Hotel, which is overlooking the Perigiali Quay.  We had time for some lunch and a welcome cooling drink, before heading to the local supermarket for some initial victualling.  We didn't buy much - mostly non perishables, as we were anticipating mooring within easy distance of tavernas each night and being able to purchase provisions for the following lunch each morning.  It is worth noting, that onboard the charter yacht were all cleaning materials, cleaning cloths, tea towels, toilet rolls, kitchen roll and bin bags (large and small for the heads).  We had also pre-ordered some wine via the Nisos Yacht Charter web site from De Blanks in Nidri and this was delievered on the Sunday afternoon before we set off on our family Ionian Adventure!

For this holiday we had chosen to take part in the Assisted Bareboat Charter scheme.  Sean & Kitty were the "lead crew" on SY "Good News" and were briliant. Although I know the Ionian area pretty well and we are a competent sailing couple, it was fantastic not to have to worry or think about finding places to moor up each evening.  There were also some lovely other families on the scheme and although the scheme does not "enforce" any socialising, we had a few lovely evening meals with the other families.

We were finally onboard our yacht "Amelie" a Bavaria 45 Cruiser around 5pm and after a thorough briefing we were on our way! The yacht was in excellent condition, spotlessly clean, well equipped and extremely comfortable for our family of 5.  We had the same yacht from Nisos last year with ten on board, so this was a lot more luxurious!

That first evening we left the Nisos Yacht Charter base at Perigiali for Little Vathi on the north coast of Meganissi Island, which was only an hour away.  Although you can stay in base if you wish, we were very keen (as were all other clients I think) to take advantage of the advantageous start position and get away!  This is the beauty of starting further down the coast of Lefkas Island, than say Lefkas Marina.  You have so many options close by for mooring that first night, if your charter company lets you get away (as Nisos always does).
